I had my eye on the Made by Rae Luna Pants ever since I saw a copy of the pattern at Hometown, but never got around to sewing a pair. It’s not a pattern I see many people making and sharing on Instagram, so I suppose I just sort of forgot about them. While planning our programme of workshops for 2022 I spotted the pattern on our supplier’s website and remembered how much I liked them! I thought they would work well for a class and be something our customers would be keen to sew and wear, so I ordered a copy of the pattern to make a sample.
The Luna Pants are loose-fitting with a tapered leg and a comfortable fit. They feature inseam pockets and are comprised of four main pieces, with facings attached inside the pants to form the waistband. The pattern is designed for beginners and is a perfect starting-point for students that are keen to learn to sew trousers. They are straightforward to make and simple enough that I can cover all of the required techniques in a one-day workshop.
Another reason the Luna Pants are a good candidate for a workshop is their versatility in terms of fabric choice. They work very well in beginner-friendly fabrics like cotton lawn and chambray, but also look great in fabrics like linen blends and viscose – so once you have made your first pair, you can make them again in a substrate that is more challenging to sew to progress your skills further. They can also be versatile in your wardrobe depending on your fabric choice – the 4oz cotton denim pair I have made are an every-day basic, but make them in a viscose with a bold print and throw on some heels and you’ll be ready for a night out!
This is the first time I have used a Made By Rae pattern, so I wasn’t sure what the fit would be like and I took the precaution of tracing the pattern so I could make them again in a different size if I needed to. I opted for the XS and the fit is fine but I think they are a little tighter than they are intended to be, so next time I will make a size S for a more relaxed fit.
So the Luna Pants are a winner in my book and they will be making an appearance as a workshop very soon! Keep an eye on my website where I will add the dates when they are confirmed. In the meantime, I have recently made another sample for a new workshop which I will be photographing and blogging this week and I have one more sample to sew – I hope you all love them as much as I do!
