About Me

Welcome to Mint Button School of Sewing! After 15 years as a primary school teacher I am excited to combine my experience and expertise from the classroom with my passion for sewing.

My own sewing journey began in 2009 when my now mother-in-law inspired me to try my hand at quilting. I embarked on a stupidly ambitious first project, but enjoyed the process enormously and was quickly hooked! I have now made over 60 quilts and my work has been exhibited at the Festival of Quilts.

In 2013 I was inspired by the first series of the Great British Sewing Bee to give dressmaking a try. Like many beginners, I made some rather unwearable garments using quilting cotton and ‘big four’ patterns, but then I discovered the world of ‘indie’ sewing patterns and had much more success! I have since made a huge range of garments, from dresses, skirts and shirts to coats, tailored jackets and activewear.

You can see more of my sewing over at @stitch_make_bake on Instagram or follow the link above to read about my latest projects on the blog.

Feeling inspired? I would love to be part of your sewing journey and hope to see you at Mint Button soon!

Testimonials

I did a recent class with Mel at Hometown in Rochester for the Macaron quilt. It was great fun and Mel was delightful but also instructed and demonstrated to the group very clearly. I came away feeling confidant that I could carry on at home. I can’t recommend her class enough and I’m hoping to go to more, or even ask for a one-to-one.’

Anna

I thoroughly enjoyed the Macaron quilt class that I recently attended at Hometown. Mel is a wonderful teacher and demystified quilting curves very quickly. She created a wonderful atmosphere and it was a thoroughly enjoyable day. Thank you so much Mel!
