Welcome to Mint Button School of Sewing! After 15 years as a primary school teacher I am excited to combine my experience and expertise from the classroom with my passion for sewing.
My own sewing journey began in 2009 when my now mother-in-law inspired me to try my hand at quilting. I embarked on a stupidly ambitious first project, but enjoyed the process enormously and was quickly hooked! I have now made over 50 quilts and my work has been exhibited at the Festival of Quilts.
In 2013 I was inspired by the first series of the Great British Sewing Bee to give dressmaking a try. Like many beginners, I made some rather unwearable garments using quilting cotton and ‘big four’ patterns, but then I discovered the world of ‘indie’ sewing patterns and had much more success! I have since made a huge range of garments, from dresses, skirts and shirts to coats, tailored jackets and activewear.
You can see more of my sewing over at @stitch_make_bake on Instagram or follow the link above to read about my latest projects on the blog.
Feeling inspired? I would love to be part of your sewing journey and hope to see you at Mint Button soon!
I did a recent class with Mel at Hometown in Rochester for the Macaron quilt. It was great fun and Mel was delightful but also instructed and demonstrated to the group very clearly. I came away feeling confidant that I could carry on at home. I can’t recommend her class enough and I’m hoping to go to more, or even ask for a one-to-one.’
I thoroughly enjoyed the Macaron quilt class that I recently attended at Hometown. Mel is a wonderful teacher and demystified quilting curves very quickly. She created a wonderful atmosphere and it was a thoroughly enjoyable day. Thank you so much Mel!
Mel has recently taught me how to put a quilt together from start to finish. I enjoyed the whole process immensely and I learned so much. We went through every step: from cutting the fabric to putting each block together. Mel was very patient and knowledgeable. She gave me good tips and insights on how to lay out the blocks, as well as creating the “quilt sandwich” and how to hand quilt. The experience gave me the confidence I needed, and I have since attempted a baby quilt on my own.
My daughter absolutely loved her 1:1 with Mel. She learnt so much and produced a gorgeous skirt. Mel is so patient and kind. My daughter can’t wait to do another session.
Mel came to our house for my daughters 11th birthday sewing party. The children absolutely loved it! It was pitched at exactly the right level and every child produced a beautiful drawstring bag. Some had never used a sewing machine before, but Mel’s guidance was so clear, they coped just fine. I’d highly recommend Mel for this type of party.
